Viruses
What is a virus? A virus is a little program that hides on your system by attaching its self to another file, when this file is run the virus is also loaded, once load the virus can do whatever it is programmed to do so, for example it firstly copies its self onto files locate on your main drive, usually files that are load with windows, such as explorer and some of your .dll files, it does this so it has control of your system every time you start-up.

In most cases, it then searches for ways of transmitting it self to others via the Internet, mostly by attaching it's self to e-mails; it can also be transmitted by accident or on purpose via file-sharing app. such as kazaa.

The next stage is to drop its payload as its called, it can either drop its payload immediately or what until a given command or date such as the famous Friday the 13th or April 1st viruses, these are just a few of 10s of thousands of viruses and variations. The payload can do anything at all, such as totally formatting your main drives, moving/deleting files, adding/editing files and basically anything, the possibilities are endless, viruses or their writers are getting ever more intelligent.

Where do viruses come from? Who knows, bored students, people who just want to fool around, people with personal vendettas against companies/people, basically anyone with good computer knowledge can gang together a virus, this is why viruses are so wide spread and so many.

How do I check if I have a virus? and how do I get rid of it? Well my personal favourite is Norton Anti-virus, very close runner-up is McAfee's Online, these are the most popular virus killers on the market and well worth paying for. Another well-documented alternative is PC-Cillian, I have never used this personally but I have read many good reviews. I do not know of any free virus killers still available, their used to be a few around but now you have to pay for them, if anyone knows of any please contact me by e-mail.

Although AVG Anti-Virus is on a free offer for a limited time only, please check out thier site for details.
